Jakarta – Moeldoko, Chief of Staff to the President, emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritize Islamic education and improve the welfare of religious teachers. Speaking at a recent event, he highlighted the crucial role of Islamic education in shaping the nation’s values and character.
During the National Working Meeting of the Nahdlatul Ulama Teachers’ Association (PERGUNU) in Majalengka, West Java, on Saturday (17/6) Moeldoko addressed thousands of teachers and Islamic scholars. He emphasized the government’s dedication to strengthening human resources in the country and recognized the significant contributions of religious teachers in shaping the younger generation.
“In our efforts to enhance the quality of Indonesia’s human resources, the government has devised a long-term plan. We place great importance on the welfare of teachers, including ulama, who play a central role in the nation’s character development,” stated Moeldoko.
To support Islamic scholars, teachers, and instructors, the government provides the Indonesian Education Scholarship (BPI). This scholarship program is funded by the Education Fund Management Agency (LPDP) and aims to ensure the professional development and financial well-being of teachers.
Moeldoko further highlighted the government’s commitment to nurturing future scholars. The Education Scholarship for Future Ulama, a program managed by the Istiqlal Mosque Management Agency (BPMI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, offers scholarships for master’s and doctoral studies.
In addition to scholarships, the government is also focused on strengthening Pesantren, or Islamic boarding schools, and promoting their economic sustainability. The Ministry of Religious Affairs has developed a roadmap to empower Pesantren, aiming to enhance their economic resources and ensure their long-term viability.
The government’s efforts to improve Islamic education also extend to non-civil servant teachers under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The Executive Office of the President (KSP) is closely monitoring and ensuring the timely disbursement of teacher allowances for institutions such as Raudhatul Athfal (RA) and Madrasah.
Moeldoko recognized the immense influence of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), not only in religious matters but also in economic and socio-cultural aspects. He commended NU for its contributions to national development and acknowledged the organization’s role as a critical partner that holds the government accountable to effective and targeted policies.
Addressing the teachers gathered at the event, Moeldoko praised their dedication and emphasized the importance of education in advancing the Indonesian nation. He highlighted the collective efforts of the Nahdlatul Ulama Teachers’ Association (PERGUNU) in promoting education and expressed confidence in their ability to shape a brighter future for Indonesia.
The National Working Meeting of Pergunu, which also included a commemoration of KH. Abdul Chalim’s contributions to the nation’s independence struggle and the establishment of Nahdlatul Ulama in 1926, witnessed the presence of prominent figures such as Prof. Dr. KH Asep Saifuddin Chalim and KH As’ad Said Ali.
